Webinar: Tree Response to Pruning

September 19, 2024 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Please join us Thursday, September 19, for a free webinar brought to you by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council (TUFC) and the UT Residential and Community Forestry Workgroup!

They may not say much about it, but how trees respond to the important arboriculture practice of pruning is often not fully understood by practitioners. Often, pruning specifications and directives are provided without explanation of the biology behind our discourse. This session will provide a survey into the impact of pruning relative to physiological and biomechanical responses including hormonal reactions, phenolic influences, and carbon allocation, from trees to improve our outcomes from pruning.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the response of trees from pruning relative to the recovery process known as compartmentalization of decay in trees.
  • Recognize the impact of pruning dose on energy systems in the tree and carbohydrate production and storage.
  • Identify the biomechanical effect of large branch removal on trees in response to dynamic loading.
  • Recognize the influence of pruning on the transportation of various endogenous hormones including auxins and cytokinins.
  • Distinguish how timing of the pruning process can affect recovery and growth of trees.
