The Algood Scarlet Oak

This huge Scarlet Oak, Quercus coccinea, stands in the middle of the outdoor classroom at Algood Middle School.  It stands 93 feet tall, with a diameter over five feet and a crown spread of 75 feet.  Classes for the students have been held under the canopy of this tree since 2002 and thousands of children have enjoyed the tree in the last two decades.

It is also rumored to be on the Trail of Tears and early Cherokee arrow heads have been discovered near the tree.  A respectable estimate of the age of the tree is over 200 years.
