Here's your chance to recognize the people and groups who make urban forestry possible in Tennessee.

Nominations for TUFC's Urban Forestry Awards of Excellence are due July 4.

TUFC presents awards for outstanding leadership, education efforts, or activities that have made a significant contribution to establishing and maintaining viable community forests in Tennessee. Categories include Private Professional, Media, Builder/Developer, Government Employee, Citizen Activist, Green Industry, and Tree Board. Nomination form

TUFC's Planting a Sustainable Future opens September 18

TUFC's 23rd annual urban forestry conference focuses on trees and sustainability September 18–19 at Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville.

The Tennessee Tree Climb is September 20 at nearby Sevier Park.

Registration begins July 15. Programs will focus on problems and solutions for arborists and government tree stewards. TUFC will present the annual Awards of Excellence.

Ash borer found in Putnam,
five more eastern counties

The Division of Forestry's emerald ash borer quarantine now includes Putnam in Middle Tennessee and Carter, Johnson, Sullivan, Washington, and Unicoi counties in the east.

Since it was first detected in 2010, EAB has spread to 27 counties now under federal/state quarantine. More

Forestry grant deadline is July 18

Deadline for urban and community forestry grants from the state Division of Forestry is July 18. These are not tree planting grants but are intended to establish and build local urban and community forestry programs to a managing level. More

Teacher workshop is July 14

A free teacher workshop focusing on conservation is July 14-18 in Knoxville.

Participants study forest conservation through hands-on examples that can be incorporated into classroom instruction. The workshops are sponsored by UT Extension, the Tennessee Forestry Association, and Memphis Lumberman's Club. More

Tree care workshop is July 26

A free tree care workshop is July 26 in Knoxville. Presentations include tree physiology, pruning standards, cultural factors of topping, and tree care business models.

The UT Department of Forestry event is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Hollingsworth Auditorium and includes breakfast and lunch.

Register by July 19.

West chapter meets August 29

The West Tennessee chapter of TUFC meets August 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Memphis Botanic Garden, followed by a visit to MBG's Farmers Market.

TUFC West offers course for urban forestry advisors

The West Tennessee chapter offers its fifth urban forestry advisor training course September 3 through October 1.

The five-week course provides 20 hours of instruction by local experts. Classes are held Wednesday 9am-1pm at Memphis Botanic Garden.

Lectures and field work will cover tree biology, ID and selection, risk management, diagnostics, site analysis, tree inventory, construction protection, and the role of government agencies.

Cost is $85; class is limited. Register
